Chirkut is a study app. We collect only what the app needs to run. We never sell it to anyone.
On this website (chirkut.app)
When you join the waitlist, your email or phone number and (optionally) which exam you are taking are saved straight into a Google Sheet that only we can open. It is used only to tell you about the launch. Write to hello@chirkut.app at any time and it is deleted.
This site carries Meta's pixel, so we can tell which of our ads on Facebook and Instagram are working. It keeps a cookie in your browser and tells Meta which pages you open: on a note, which chapter, and whether you are actually working through it; on the MCQ practice page, when you start a set, finish it, or tap the invite link, again only the chapter, subject and page language. What you pick or answer inside a note or MCQ, or any score, is never sent. If you arrive by clicking one of our ads, a marker of that click (the ad click ID) is kept for 90 days in a cookie of this site's own, so we can tell which ad brought you.
When you join the waitlist, your email or phone number goes to Meta too, but only hashed: scrambled before it is sent, so that the address or number itself can no longer be read. The copy this page sends is scrambled in your own browser; the copy our server sends is scrambled on the server. The same scrambled value also goes as an anonymous ID, so Meta can tell the two reports are the same signup and count it once. We send it only so the signup can be matched to an ad of ours you may have seen. Turning on your browser's tracking protection or an ad blocker stops the pixel, and the site works just the same; the hashed copy from our server is sent either way.
If you arrive through a friend's link (like chirkut.app/signup.html?r=RAFI), the code in it stays in your browser for 30 days, so the box is filled in when you open an account. If you open an account with the code, we keep who sent you, and tell your friend only that someone joined and how many have so far; never your name or email. If a code is there when you join the waitlist, it goes with your signup to the waitlist list and to our email service (Brevo).
Your choice of language, and of notebook or blackboard, lives only in your browser (localStorage) and never reaches us.
If you open an account (on this website)
If you open a Chirkut account on this website, we collect your email and a password, or, if you sign in with Google, your name and email from Google. In your profile you give: your name, whether the account is a student's or a guardian's, your exam, group, district, the name of your school or college, and (optionally) a phone or WhatsApp number. We also keep your language, and your confirmation that you are 13 or older and, if you are under 18, that a parent or guardian knows.
This is stored in Google's Firebase service (the sign-in and profile database). We never see your password; Firebase keeps it scrambled. When you save your profile, a copy also goes into our waitlist Google Sheet, which only we can open.
It is used to open your account, to confirm the email really is yours, and to set up your exam's subjects and your waitlist discount on launch day. The discount applies to accounts opened before launch with a confirmed email.
The email that confirms your address is sent by Brevo (our email service) from hello@chirkut.app. Brevo can see your email address, and it counts whether the link in the mail was clicked. When you join the waitlist with an email, Brevo also holds that email, your exam and your language, so it can send the welcome mail.
When you save your profile, we tell Meta that a signup happened. What goes with it is your email (hashed), your exam, your language and your browser type. Your name, district, school or college, phone number or password never go. We send it only so the signup can be matched to the ad of ours that brought you.
MCQ practice and review: when you practise MCQs while logged in, each answer sends the question's number (its id) and whether you got it right or wrong to our server. The questions you miss are kept in your account in a review list, along with when to show each one again, so they come back on the review page just before you would forget them. We also keep how many MCQs you answer each day and in each chapter, and how many of those were right, just the numbers, to show your daily streak and which chapters are shaky on your progress page (the daily numbers are dropped after two months); which boards and years your questions came from; which questions of each chapter you have answered at least once; and which stickers you have won, and when. We do not keep which option you picked, or what you scored on any one set or mock test. If you miss a question on a board-question page without logging in, its number stays only in your browser; the next time you log in to your account it moves to your review list once and is removed from the browser. None of this goes to Meta or any advertiser, and it will carry over into the app. Deleting your account deletes it too.
These services (Google, Brevo, Cloudflare and Meta) run on servers outside Bangladesh. Cloudflare runs our site and small servers. To stop abuse, your network address is held for up to two hours when you ask for a confirmation email.
We keep your data while your account exists. Write to hello@chirkut.app and your account, profile, sheet rows and Brevo contact are deleted within 7 days.
Friends: if someone joins with your code, or you joined with theirs, each of you sees on the account page only the other's first name, how many questions or cards they did this week, and their streak. Nothing more, and nobody without that code link.
Reminders: if you turn the reminder on from the account page, your browser gives us an address (at Google's, Apple's, Mozilla's or Microsoft's push service), and we keep it with the hour and language you chose. The text of the notification is written on our server and sent encrypted, so the push service cannot read it. Turn it off, or let the browser drop the address, and nothing more is sent.
In the app (after launch)
Account: Sign in with email or Google. This is the same account and profile you open on the website, and nothing beyond what is described above.
Study data: Which card you saw when, and how you rated it. This is needed to run spaced repetition and to work out the "remembered" figure on your profile. How many cards you review each day, just the number, also goes to our server, so the website and the app keep one streak. It is yours alone, shared with no one beyond the friends' count described above.
Payment: Handled by SSLCommerz (bKash, Nagad, cards). Your card or bKash number never reaches our servers; we only know which subject was bought.
AI help ("Explain it"): Your question and the notes of the relevant chapter are sent to an AI service to generate the answer. Your name and email are not sent.
Parent digest: Only if you or your parent turn it on, one SMS goes out each week: how many days you studied and what percentage you remember.
What we do not do
We do not sell data. Inside the app, your studying and your answers never go to any advertiser. On this website, only the signup details described above go to Meta, and only hashed. No account is opened for anyone under 13 without a parent's permission.
Our ads may be shown to people aged 15 and over. If you are under 18, tell a parent or guardian before you join the waitlist. A parent or guardian can ask us to delete your details at any time by writing to hello@chirkut.app.
Your rights
To see, download or delete all of your data, write to hello@chirkut.app. It is done within 7 days.
